Watch last year’s ESA Awards Judging Day highlights and interviews:

2021

The ESA Awards remains the only honour to acknowledge outstanding work by sponsorship professionals right across Europe, and, thanks to the impartiality and deep industry understanding of our judging panel, this ensures that the winners can be justifiably proud of their achievements.

Our esteemed judges bring insight, direction and robust evaluation to the judging programme. With a two stage process of judging, being an ESA Awards judge provides you with the opportunity to witness and award some of Europe’s best sponsorship work.

The ESA Awards is now over a decade old, and we’ve continually strived to attract the most knowledgeable sponsorship practitioners to our panel. We do this in order to ensure that all entries, no matter whether they’re from a small agency or a large multi-national rights holder, receive the same expert critique and are judged purely on merit against a comprehensive criteria-based matrix.

Winning an ESA Award really is an achievement and we’re delighted to welcome judges both new and old to our 2021 competition.

      Director - Strategic partnerships

      LinkedIn

Huge love for symbiotic partnerships motivates me daily and is why I adore working in the sponsorship industry. Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was a game changer for me. I learned from the best in the industry what it takes to deliver one of the biggest multi-sport games in the world. From there I joined the trailblazing team at Glasgow Warriors professional rugby, in their strongest season, where they became the first Scottish team to win the PRO12 (now 14) A personal highlight is the Scottish Power partnership. An incredible example of truly authentic partnership with community at it’s heart.  I relocated to London where I’m a Director with IMG, building strategic partnerships across the EMEA golf portfolio.  The most recent event was the Solheim Cup 2019 at Gleneagles, the biggest women’s global golf event to date. We enjoyed a hugely successful sponsorship programme working with Scotland-wide partners including Aggreko, Scotrail Abellio and Glasgow Airport.

    • Filip Waegemans

      Sponsorship Consultant

      LinkedIn
      @WaegemansFilip

Hi, my name is Filip Waegemans from Antwerp, Belgium.

After a career in IT, Customer Service & Guerrilla marketing I changed careers to Sponsorships for a good 12 years. I managed the movie, music & culture Sponsorship portfolio for Belgium’s leading Telecom company, Proximus. Over the years, I witnessed the evolution of Sponsorships from pure patronage to partnerships and onward to becoming a full member of the marketing mix. I must say that it was an exciting trip. One of the biggest lessons I learned along the road was the need for information sharing and connection in Sponsorships. In Belgium, Sponsor Live and The Belgian Sponsoring Awards did a great job answering this need. I won an Award and became a judge in last year’s ESA Awards. This inspired me to do more for the community. There is a message to send out to the rest of Europe to join, to unite and to share knowledge. I want to support this message with all my energy.

      Marylebone Cricket Club
      Sponsorship Sales

      LinkedIn

I’ve wanted to work in sports sponsorship ever since reading an article about the glamour of the Formula 1 Paddock back in my early teens.  Having made this my aim, I’ve tailored my career to this end ever since, having worked in golf, rugby and cricket from my early 20s.

As I’ve only ever worked rights-holder side, I self-funded the ESA Diploma back in 2015, which really helped me to understand contemporary sponsorship from agency and brand perspectives. The key learning, and one that I still utilise today, is that of “win-win-win”, for rights holders, brands and most importantly, fans.

My current role at Marylebone Cricket Club has involved us completely re-assessing the approach to finding Club Partners. Our focus has shifted to an in depth understanding of our audience so that any brands who we work alongside in the future know that our Members and guests strongly resonate with their target markets.

In terms of next steps, I am working towards the role of Commercial Director in sport.
