Unlocking Women’s Potential in Sailing: The Generali Women in Sailing Initiative
In 2019, the World Sailing Trust conducted a study to uncover gender disparities in the sport and chart a course toward gender balance. The findings were stark; gender discrimination in sailing was shockingly prevalent, demanding action.
Generali, known for values beyond mere brand recognition, seized an opportunity within its long-standing partnership with the Barcolana, the biggest regatta in the world. We introduced the “Generali Women in Sailing” trophy in 2020, awarded to the first mixed sailing team led by a woman. This prestigious award includes a beautiful glass trophy handcrafted in Murano and a tailormade coaching and leadership course from the Generali Academy.
The impact went beyond recognition, giving birth to the “Generali Women in Sailing” regatta, exclusively for mixed teams captained by women. In just a few years, this initiative gained significant attention from the media and sailors.
For Barcolana 2023, we strengthened the project with a Brand Ambassador, Francesca Clapcich, a trailblazer in women’s empowerment and sailing. As a Media Partner, we engaged Freeda, a platform committed to breaking down stereotypes and inspiring positive change. The results exceeded expectations, reflecting growing interest and support for women in sailing.
Generali’s commitment to women in sailing is about breaking barriers and fostering a culture of inclusion and empowerment.
