DataPOWA has today released a list of the Premier League teams as ranked by POWA index, the data-driven, real-time sports sponsorship valuation engine, during the UK lockdown. Analysis of multiple datasets across digital platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Google, Bing & Baidu reveal which clubs are leveraging digital and mobile most effectively during the unprecedented pause in sport.
Liverpool top the lockdown rankings and are starting to mount a challenge to Manchester United as the most powerful UK sports team sponsorship property globally. Their huge fanbase is active on all digital platforms, in anticipation of the return and conclusion of the Premier League season to end Liverpool’s 30-year league title wait.
Chelsea fans are buying into Frank Lampard’s vision at Stamford Bridge, the South West London club outpacing both Manchester United and Arsenal on the lockdown list, taking 2nd position.
Speculation surrounding a Saudi Arabia-funded takeover of Newcastle United affords them a lofty 3rd place, the ownership situation seemingly reigniting the passion of the Toon Army, even with the accompanying controversy.
7th placed Sheffield United have been the surprise package since returning to the top flight after a 12-year absence, and performances under Chris Wilder have won them new followers on social media and they continue to engage and grow their audience during the hiatus in live football.
DataPOWA C.E.O. Michael Flynn said:
“The Covid-19 lockdown has accelerated the change in the way fans engage with their teams as interactions have moved almost exclusively online and given us some interesting results in POWA index Premier League scores. Liverpool, who have overtaken Manchester United in the UK and are closing in on them globally, have the best performance during lockdown. Chelsea’s outlook looks bright as there’s lots of positivity there. Sheffield United’s POWA score during the lockdown shows the importance of Premier League status, and they are capitalising on the opportunity they’ve earned.”
