January 2019 saw ESA’s Brunchtime event presented by Founder and CEO of The Marketing Academy, Sherilyn Shackell with an engaging overview of Lessons in Life and Leadership.
5 Key Takeaways:
1We all have a ‘Mildred’ – our inner voice that tries to protect us from getting hurt. It’s the voice that says “You can’t do that.” Or “Are you sure you want to do that?” or ‘If you try that you’ll fail’ or ‘You’re totally faking it and everyone knows’. It’s the voice that makes us stop trying new things, taking that leap out of your comfort zone. It can also undermine our confidence, repeating a narrative or story that makes us question our decisions and at worse chips away at our confidence or self-esteem. You can rein it in! Recognise that IT IS ONLY IN YOUR HEAD. Visualise it as an animal, cartoon, character so you can stop taking it too seriously. Everyone has a Mildred, but good leaders are those that ignore it or at least question it and are always aware of it. What’s yours called?
2Great leaders are exhausted every day, not because of how hard they’ve worked but because of how much they’ve given. Strong leaders are those who put OTHERS first, not themselves and have the mindset of ‘GIVE’ not ‘GET’. It’s not “How am I going to get this promotion?”, “How do I get this client to accept my proposal?”. It’s not about GET, it’s about GIVE. “What can I give my team to help them perform at their highest level?”, “What can I give my client that will make his job easier?”.
3Everyone has a persona, but what you need is character. We all have a persona that we use as a shield or mask – the thing we inhabit when in any situation where we feel the need to control the other persons perception of us. We may slip it on when we’re in a new situation , or when speaking to colleagues, clients, etc. Good leaders are those who don’t move into a persona, but show their true character – they’re authentic and speak from the heart to build trust between you as a leader and your staff / clients. Show your character, not your persona.
4Great managers drive people to perform their tasks/jobs by utilising targets, processes, scorecards, methodology and is all about control. Great leaders inspire and empower their people to do it for themselves and is all about freedom.
5Challenge up and support down. Be the leader you want to follow.
