In consultation with members, the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) has submitted a written response to the Irish Government’s Working Group set up to seek evidence and information on ‘Regulating sponsorship by alcohol companies of major sporting events’.
Among the issues raised were queries about how sponsorship is different to other advertising/marketing disciplines, the financial value an alcohol sponsor can bring, whether sporting organisations can be funded by other sectors and what regulatory models work well in other countries.
Prepared by ESA’s Head of Policy, Helen Day, the response draws on ESA’s significant experience with working on this topic and its access to data and evidence. It provides the Irish government with evidence of robust academic work, statistics on alcohol sponsorship and experience drawn from other markets in Europe.
