Hong Kong, March 3 2014 – Hong Kong sports fans and music lovers received a huge boost today following the announcement by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) and the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) of the new HK Fan Zone that will provide a week of sport and entertainment at the New Central Harbourfront during the week leading up to the world famous Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The 36,000 square metre city-centre site will provide a range of activities including live action from Hong Kong Stadium, visits from star players and a funfair by day, before transforming into a live music venue by night, featuring a week-long line-up of top Cantopop and international music artists performing to capacity crowds of 15,000 fans each night.
Speaking about the initiative, Trevor Gregory, Chairman of the HKRFU said, “The HK Fan Zone is a very exciting new project designed to broaden the appeal and access of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens to everybody in Hong Kong. The Fan Zone will have activities to suit all, irrespective of their age or knowledge of the game and is a key component of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union’s outreach into the local community. “The location, overlooking Victoria Harbour in Central is first class. It is proximity to both the Star Ferry and Central MTR makes it accessible to everybody and will ensure that the last week of March, known worldwide as Rugby Week, really is a festival for everyone to enjoy in Hong Kong,” continued Gregory.
Dr Peter Lam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) said, “Through the years, the HKTB and the HKRFU have promoted the Hong Kong Sevens together to encourage overseas visitors to participate in this world-renowned sporting event in Hong Kong. This year, the HKTB is delighted to co-organise the HK Fan Zone with the HKRFU to give visitors and local residents the opportunity to enjoy the excitement of the games and a brand new experience.”
Open from 9am to 11pm each day, the HK Fan Zone will run from Tuesday 25th to Sunday 30th March and will feature eight separate zones incorporating giant screens showing live coverage from the Hong Kong Stadium, rugby coaching clinics, daily team visits, a food village, after-work meet point, a sponsor interactive village and live music each night.
As event producer Alex Brazendale, Managing Director of TCOB Events explained, “We’ve been working on the concept of a fan zone for over a year now and are absolutely delighted that with the backing of both the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union and the Hong Kong Tourism Board, The HK Fan Zone will be making its debut in 2014. “The HK Fan Zone will look to capture the excitement of all the tournaments during Rugby Week to create a festival for Hong Kong, by Hong Kong. While there will certainly be a strong rugby element to it, this will be about much more than rugby. It’s about providing a free and accessible fun day out during the day and world class entertainment every night that everyone in Hong Kong can enjoy and be proud of.”
With a concerted team effort in force, Brazendale has drafted in the organisers of Hong Kong’s leading music festival Clockenflap to secure a first class music line up featuring a combination of top Cantopop artists, a leading international DJ and world famous rock group that will be announced in the coming weeks. The HK Fan Zone is a charitable event that will see any surplus income generated by the event donated to charities affiliated with the HKRFU.
