British tennis star Andy Murray has spoken candidly about why he enjoys the physical and emotional suffering that comes with playing at the pinnacle of tennis and is now more determined than ever to enjoy whatever future success comes his way.
Murray has launched Jaguar’s Show Your Edge content series that discovers new psychological insights behind Britain’s leading tennis stars ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon. In the film, Murray reveals he has missed the competition and the battle against his rivals more than anything. He said: “I enjoy the suffering. I like being pushed really hard. It’s what I thrive off. It’s what gives me my edge.”
To go alongside the launch, Murray gave an exclusive interview with Jaguar in which he spoke candidly about his career to date, his ambitions for the future and the moment he realised he needed to be ruthless in the pursuit of his dream.
“I have always been obsessed with competition. I remember deciding I needed to move abroad to a professional tennis camp when I was practicing next to Rafa Nadal and saw him warming up with Carlos Moya!”
Murray steps up his comeback from injury at Eastbourne today after an epic battle with Nick Kyrgios at Queen’s Club last week. Murray’s time out of the game has granted him time to reflect on his successes as well as his frustrations. He explained: “I took some of my achievements for granted. I wish I gave myself a bit more credit.
“This time away has enabled me to reflect on my career, and it has given me a new determination to enjoy and relish any future successes that come my way.”
Murray has made a promise to his wife, Kim, to enjoy his wins in the future. He said: “The last tournament I won (in Dubai), I had a massage and room service and I’m still annoyed about it now. I have made a promise to Kim that if I win another Grand Slam we will celebrate it properly!”
Murray is determined to prove his fitness in time for this year’s Championships. He added: “It’s hurt not being out on the court and playing in front of big crowds. There’s nowhere I love playing tennis more. I have played my best tennis at Wimbledon because I enjoy the pressure. This time out of the game has made me realise that I want to carry on for as long as I possibly can. I hope I have a good week and can be fit to play in front of the fans at Wimbledon.”
COMING SOON: Jaguar’s Show Your Edge content series continues with exclusive insight from Britain’s Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta.
