Los Angeles Chargers announced earlier this year that the NFL had granted the team international marketing rights to Greece, introducing Flag Football to the country for the first time in an organized and strategic way. This milestone was part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program, which aimed to expand the sport beyond the United States. Flag Football was set to make its debut as an Olympic sport at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, making its introduction to Greece even more timely.

The NFL (National Football League), founded in 1920, was established as the premier professional American football league, featuring 32 teams divided between the AFC and NFC conferences. Its season culminated in the Super Bowl, one of the most-watched sporting events worldwide. ActiveMedia Group, a five-time Sports Marketing Agency of the Year in Greece and a member of the European Sponsorship Association (ESA), played a key role – together with the Los Angeles Chargers – in bringing the Flag Football experience to Greek fans.
The official announcement event hosted Greek media representatives and Los Angeles Chargers executives, including Fred Maas, Chief of Staff and Counselor for the team. During his stay in Athens, Mr. Maas met with key government officials, including ministers, deputy ministers, and the Secretary General of Sport, Mr. George Mavrotas, to explore the potential of flag football in Greece and its benefits for local communities.
Some months later, NFL team Los Angeles Chargers inaugurated a new era for American football in Santorini, presenting the first-ever NFL Flag Football Event! The schedule included training camps for children aged 11-13 and teenagers aged 13 and above, through which young participants had the opportunity to learn the basic principles of flag football and test their skills alongside top athletes. The experience concluded with a special Watch Party, where guests watched the Chargers’ victory over the Dolphins live! The event was further highlighted by the visit of Michael Spanos, Co-Owner and Vice Chairman of the Los Angeles Chargers, whose presence underscored the growing connection between Los Angeles Chargers and Santorini.
This initiative was a strategic and innovative step for the Los Angeles Chargers and ActiveMedia Group, bringing a new athletic culture to Greece, connecting global sports to local communities, and generating long-term value for the country’s sports landscape.
